Helping to Keep You Young at Heart

Adding folate or folic acid to your PCOS diet may play a key role in keeping your mind young, lowering the risk of Cardiovascular Disease and helping some women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome reduce the risk of suffering from hypertension or high blood pressure.
 
Folate helps the body form red blood cells and a daily helping of this water-soluble B-complex vitamin appears to ward off one of the causes of age-related cognitive decline, namely high homocysteine levels. It lowers blood levels of homocysteine, which is a protein that can damage brain cells. Homocysteine can also harm blood vessels and increase the likelihood of Cardiovascular Disease.
 
Fruit such as oranges, strawberries and avocados are folate-rich foods. When it comes to vegetables, high folate levels are found in asparagus, Brussels sprouts, artichokes, broccoli and spinach.
 
Certain fortified grain foods, such as fortified breads and cereals, contain the synthetic form of folate, which is called folic acid. It’s a good idea to check the labels on these products to determine their folic acid content.
 
Several scientific studies have documented a link between increased folate or folic acid intake and decreased rates of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease. Other ways to help preserve cognitive function are to keep physically and mentally active while eating a healthy diet that includes Omega-3 fats from nuts, olive oil and fish.
