An Old PCOS Saying is Truer Than Ever

The familiar adage, “You are what you eat,” has never been more relevant. PCOS researchers have found that many common health problems, ranging from obesity to Alzheimer’s Disease, can be eased by eating more of the foods that people actually like.

A study by Penn State University, for example, showed that dieters who had broth before their main meals lost more weight and kept it off than those who didn’t consume broth or ate snacks instead. Because broth is mainly water, a bowl before meals helps to make people full on fewer calories by reducing their appetite.

Salad-lovers don’t have to restrict themselves to fat-free dressing all the time. A recent study by Iowa State University suggests that significantly more carotenoids – healthy compounds found in fruits and vegetables – are absorbed by the body when a reduced-fat dressing is used.

Coffee may lower the risk of liver disease, cancer, clogged arteries, Type II Diabetes and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease, according to a report presented at the New York Academy of Sciences. The explanation is that each cup is a complex mixture of active components, including healthful antioxidants which help prevent cell damage. Remember, however, to limit your intake of caffeine because it stimulates the production of insulin, intensifies stress and contributes to irregular blood sugar levels.

Another good source of antioxidants, namely blueberries, may also help to break down cholesterol and fat. Research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s laboratories in Oxford, Mississippi, found that a compound in the berries, called pterostilbene, could prove to be a potent weapon for doctors treating patients with Cardiovascular Disease.

And, finally, it’s also encouraging for those with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome to report that a study by the University of Tennessee suggests drinking low-fat or fat-free milk specifically triggers fat loss deep inside the stomach.
