Hi, my name is Robin Nielsen. I’m the Chief Wellness Officer here at Insulite Health, pcos.com. When I was a teenager and well into my 20s I could gain weight for no good reason. In fact in one day I could gain 5 pounds making it hard to fit into my jeans, and feeling bloated and inflamed. I felt alone and confused and didn’t know what was causing my weight gain. I felt like anything I put in my body only added on pounds and I lived in fear not knowing if I was ever going to feel healthy again.

Through a lot of research and going back to school to learn about integrative clinical nutrition, I learned that the underlying cause of PCOS is insulin resistance and this condition makes it difficult for us to lose weight, manage food cravings and burn body fat.

Insulin resistance also creates hormonal imbalance causing testosterone levels to increase. This also causes a chronic inflammation, higher than normal stress hormones and imbalanced brain chemistry – for example, lower moods like depression and anxiety…so weight loss is complicated when it comes to conditions related to hormone imbalance because all of our body systems are so integrated…but weight loss doesn’t need to be a mystery or a challenge.

We have so many great resources for you. There are 5 steps to lasting weight loss.

The first is using the right nutrients to help your cells get more insulin sensitive so you stop storing fat and start burning it – this means that your metabolism needs a big boost. This will also help to increase your energy. You need nutrients to help balance other hormones like lowering testosterone and raising progesterone, and nutrients for supporting healthy adrenal function and detoxification. Because all these little stressors keep us fat and tired!

The second is using food as medicine to keep hormones balanced..for life. Our bodies are super sensitive so we need to treat them with lots of love and care.

The third element is movement – use movement to balance hormones is critical, and we show you just how to do this.

The fourth is understanding cravings and how to manage them in a productive way to reach your goals.
