The Pros and Cons of Margarine

Many people eat margarine to avoid the saturated fat in butter, which can raise levels of LDL “bad” cholesterol and further increase the risk of heart disease, especially in those of us with PCOS.

But the problem with margarine, particularly in the stick variety, is that it can contain trans-fat, which also increases LDL cholesterol as well lowering levels of HDL “good” cholesterol.

One way to avoid this double whammy is to go for soft tub vegetable spread that says it is “trans-fat free” on the label. It will be low in saturated fat, too. Look out for “light” versions to reduce your calorie intake.
