Well, cravings awareness is an essential step in developing an effective strategy to improve your health…the lack of awareness is why so many diets FAIL. Our genetic makeup is not designed for us to eat as many carbs as we do. I often say, if you want to eat sugar you better get ready to run it off – because otherwise it wreaks havoc on your hormones and brain chemistry!
The reason we love sugar (carbohydrates) so much is because it raises our feel-good brain chemicals called serotonin and dopamine. So you instantly feel jazzed, calm and happy about life. But once you stop eating them…serotonin and dopamine quickly decrease, causing feelings of guilt from overeating… and depression from the drop in these brain chemicals. Often you’ll feel worse than before you overate in the first place. This creates the perpetual internal struggle of overeating.
So what can you do to break this cycle? Implement the 5% solution! Exchange a sugary carb with a healthy protein, fat and carbohydrate. For example, if you normally eat 10 cookies, cut that back to 9 cookies and substitute an apple with some almond butter. Each week cut back a little bit more on the sugar and add in something healthier. What exchange will you make this week?
