PCOS and Acne: Is DHT causing your breakouts?

PCOS and Acne: Is DHT causing your breakouts?

Research studies show that women with PCOS are likely to have acne. Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder that interacts with hormones, hair, sebaceous (oil secreting) glands and bacteria. This is due to excess levels of androgens (male sex hormones) in the skin. Androgen is a metabolite of testosterone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is one of the main causes of acne.

DHT stimulates the production of oil that leads to clogged glands or pores. When the pores and glands get clogged they are unable to release oil, which allows bacteria to grow and multiply in the follicle leading to inflammation.

Hormonal imbalances such as insulin resistance, hyperinsulinism, and increased progesterone secretion prior to your menstrual cycle can all cause acne. Having a diet high in refined, high glycemic carbohydrates can raise your insulin levels causing acne to appear. Stress is a major factor in causing acne in women. Some medications that doctors prescribe such as anabolic steroids, anti-epileptics, lithium and some oral contraceptives can also cause acne. Industrial pollutants, cosmetics, over washing or rubbing of the skin, and allergic reactions to foods may also be causes for acne to appear.

If you have acne throughout your teenage years and into adulthood and it is accompanied by hirsutism, infertility, and weight problems then it is likely you have an androgen disturbance and it could be related to PCOS.

Natural treatments for acne are pretty simple to do and are cost efficient. You want to avoid drugs that may cause acne, avoid exposure to oil or grease, use hypoallergenic cosmetics and soaps, wash the affected areas well twice daily or more if needed to remove excess oils, wash pillow cases and sheets regularly in chemical free (no added colors or fragrances) detergents, and get adequate sun exposure.
