My Morning Matcha and Why I Made the Switch

My Morning Matcha and Why I Made the Switch

By Lindsay Chandler, PCOS Food Advocate

You may have recently noticed so many people enjoying matcha, a type of green tea. You can enjoy it warm or cold, sweetened or unsweetened, and it can been added to everything from sweet treats to smoothies. Though matcha may not offer specific hormone balancing benefits, it does contain a load of amazing health benefits that can help you begin to heal some of your PCOS symptoms.

If you are like me you look forward to your morning cup of coffee, but at one point I realized that the anxiety, frustration and short temper I was experiencing just a few hours after that warm morning beverage may not be benefiting me in a positive way. Could the caffeine be making me feel this way? That is when I decided to make the switch and take notice of how I was feeling.

I added matcha to my next grocery list and was determined to find a way to enjoy this antioxidant loaded beverage. When shopping for matcha you may be overwhelmed by the amount of options you find in the tea aisle. I personally look for organic ceremonial grade matcha. It is brighter in color and I have found I tend to enjoy the taste much better. Be aware of matcha mixed powders because some may have added ingredients and sweeteners, plus whipping up the perfect matcha at home is my favorite part!

I tend to prefer my matcha hot! Here is my go to recipe for my Morning Matcha:

  1. 1 cup filtered water
  2. 1/2 cup coconut milk
  3. 1 tbsp coconut butter or coconut oil
  4. 1/2 tsp matcha powder (add your desired amount)
  5. 1/2 Medjool date or a few drops of stevia (if I’m in the mood for some sweetness)
  6. dash of cinnamon

Directions: Put all the ingredients into a blender and set it to high for about 30 seconds. You will end up with a hot frothy, delicious, hormone-balancing beverage!

People have been enjoying this ground green powder for thousands of years. What makes matcha so powerful is the use of the whole tea leaf compared to the bagged green teas you may be used to using. By using the whole ground leaf you are getting all of the health benefits that green tea has to offer. Here are just a few amazing health benefits:

  • Natural detoxifier
  • Boosts metabolism
  • Loaded with antioxidants
  • Contains fiber and chlorophyll
  • Mood stabilizer
  • Contains vitamins and amino acids
  • Naturally energizing and calming

If you’re like me and still enjoy a little caffeine boost some mornings, try making the switch. So many women who struggle with PCOS have a more difficult time metabolizing caffeine and matcha offers a much lower caffeine option with so many other health benefits. After a few days of enjoying a morning matcha I noticed that I felt much calmer with sustained energy much longer into the day. Are you ready to make the switch?
