Cilantro is a herb that is often found in salsas and guacamole. It is bright green in color and slightly resembles flat leafed parsley, but its aroma is very distinct. Cilantro has a fresh citrus-like smell and taste, making it a popular addition to many dishes around the world. Cilantro also produces seeds known as coriander, which yield their own flavor profile and health benefits. Coriander has a warm, almost nutty flavor and is often times used in curry dishes.
Coriander has been found to improve uterine function, balance female hormones and can help improve heavy menstrual bleeding. Coriander works by helping to regulate proper endocrine function – which is so important for hormone balance. Coriander isn’t the only body boosting part of cilantro. The green leafy part also has many health benefits. Cilantro is most often known for its ability to help detoxify the liver of heavy metals. It has been found that cilantro can bind to the toxins, loosening them from the tissue which aids in the toxins elimination from the body. Detoxing is important for women with PCOS because our bodies are so much more sensitive to these “toxic” hormone disruptors.
One of my other favorite benefits of cilantro is its ability to help improve natural sleep cycles. A good night’s rest during our natural sleep cycle is important for hormone balance and reducing symptoms of PCOS. Cilantro can also lower blood sugar levels and offers a generous amount of fiber.
Here are a few additional health benefits of Cilantro :
- It is an antioxidant and can protect us from free radicals
- It is loaded with calcium.
- Prevents urinary tract infections.
- Can settle digestive upset.
- Works as a natural anti-histamine.
This week pick up a few fresh organic bunches of cilantro from the produce section of the grocery store. Experiment with how many ways you can include fresh chopped cilantro leaves and stems into your diet. I enjoy adding a small handful to a green smoothie, topping my morning eggs with chopped cilantro and avocado, and adding a generous amount at dinner to curries or stews. This bright, flavorful herb is defiantly worth incorporating into your diet to help reduce toxins, improve sleep and tame PCOS symptoms.
