A Simple Way to Cut Cholesterol

Those of us with PCOS are vulnerable to the cluster of increased risk factors for cardiovascular problems called metabolic syndrome. And one of the deadliest symptoms of the latter condition is high levels of LDL “bad” cholesterol. If left unchecked, LDL cholesterol can lead to heart disease and stroke.

Regular exercise to lose weight is a great way to better manage or even reverse the symptoms of metabolic syndrome. So, too, is a balanced, nutritious diet, which includes something as simple as pistachios.

Researchers at Pennsylvania State University asked volunteers to eat an-ounce-and-a-half of the nuts (about a handful) every day for six months. At the end of the period, the participants had reduced their total cholesterol by an average of 6.7% and their LDL cholesterol by 11.6%. That kind of reduction has a major payoff because cutting your total cholesterol by about 7% reduces your heart disease risk by 14%.

Pistachios are one of the best sources of plant sterols – compounds which reduce absorption of cholesterol. One ounce contains about 160 calories, so, as you add pistachios to your diet, cut back elsewhere to compensate, like pouring a little less dressing on your salad.
