New research suggests only about 50% of women with PCOS-linked pre-diabetes who are aware of their condition are taking steps to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.Â
Â
Writing in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers discussed an analysis of survey responses from 1,402 people with pre-diabetes who participated in the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
Â
Only 7.3% of respondents said that a healthcare provider had diagnosed them with pre-diabetes and only 48% of them had been tested for diabetes or high blood sugar within the past three years.
Â
In the last 12 months, only about half of the respondents had taken steps like losing weight via reduced calorie intake and increasing exercise to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.
Â
Women with PCOS are particularly vulnerable to type 2 diabetes, which is irreversible in most cases and may require insulin injections to manage. The disorder is a severely increased risk factor for blindness, kidney disease and the need for amputation.
