Reducing the Risk of Breast Cancer

PCOS is often an underlying cause of obesity. And being overweight is cited as a major cause of breast cancer in a new report from the World Cancer Research Fund.

Thousands of women could avoid breast cancer if they adopted healthier lifestyles, says the report. Being overweight, lack of exercise and excess alcohol consumption are blamed for as many as four out of ten cases. But a balanced, nutritious diet and regular exercise can help to reduce weight to a healthy level.

Professor Martin Wiseman, WCRF medical and scientific adviser, said: “The report represents the clearest picture we have ever had on how lifestyle affects the risk of breast cancer. We are now more sure than ever that by limiting the amount of alcohol that they drink, maintaining a healthy weight and being physically active, women can make a significant difference to their risk.”

It is unclear exactly why obese women are more prone to breast cancer, But changes in sex hormone levels triggered by weight gain may be behind oestrogen-dependent tumors, which form the majority of breast cancer cases.
